FAQ

Common Questions We Get About Acupuncture

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture points are specific points located on the body proven to treat specific conditions. Stimulation of these points signals the body to produce endorphins, which are the body’s own natural painkillers. These endorphins are hundreds of times stronger than morphine. Various hormones and neurotransmitters are also released through the stimulation of acupuncture points. This is why acupuncture can alleviate pain, balance hormones and restore our sense of well being. In addition, it decreases swelling and inflammation as well as increasing circulation to promote healing of injured tissues.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
People often comment that they did not feel the insertion of the needle and are completely unaware of its presence. Occasionally, a momentary sensation, like a mosquito bite, is felt with the insertion. When the needles are appropriately stimulated, a pressure, tingling or traveling sensation may be felt. Most people are amazed by how relaxed they feel during and after the treatment.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
As long as it is performed by a competent practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Acupuncturists are required to use sterile disposable needles that are discarded after one use.
How Should I Prepare for My Treatment?
Bring a list of current medications and supplements to your first visit. Even better, bring the actual bottles to your appointment. Wear loose comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up. Eat a light meal 1-2 hrs before your appointment.
What Should I Do After My Treatment?
Drink several 8 oz glasses of water. Avoid drinking alcohol and strenuous activity for the remainder of the day. Follow the recommendations given to you by your acupuncturist.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This is unique to the individual and depends on the severity of the condition. Mild sprains and strains may heal after 1-3 treatments. More severe acute conditions and recent injuries may require 2 treatments a week for 2-3 weeks in order to provide the best outcome. Chronic conditions generally require more treatments. For chronic conditions I recommend 6-8 treatments and then I reassess your progress. Some people notice an immediate improvement in their health, while for others acupuncture tends to have a cumulative effect over several visits.
Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?
Many companies now do provide acupuncture coverage. It is best to call your insurance company to find out if your policy includes acupuncture. We will give you a receipt that you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Can Acupuncture Help Stroke Patients?
Yes. Denise has studied special acupuncture techniques that are highly effective in helping stroke patients restore mobility, speech and memory. Acupuncture works best for stroke patients when it is given as soon as possible after a stroke. Patients have a higher chance of achieving full recovery if they receive acupuncture from 1 day to three months after suffering a stroke.
